Coronavirus: Indonesia Records First Death, Iran Cases Escalate

Iran announced the death of 63 more people infected with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) Wednesday, bringing the total to 354 dead in the country. Iran is one of the most affected countries in the world by the coronavirus epidemic. The Iranian authorities also identified 958 new cases of Covid-19 infection, bringing the total to about 9,000, according to a televised press conference by the spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Kianoush Jahanpour.

Iran Vows “Severe Retaliation” Against U.S. After Soleimani Killing

Iran has vowed that it would carry out a “severe retaliation,” after a US airstrike in Baghdad on Friday killed Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force and architect of the growing military influence in the Middle East. Soleimani was a general considered to be Iran’s second most powerful figure, after only the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a statement, he said revenge awaits the “criminals” who killed Soleimani.

Sistani Warns of External Interference in Iraq Protests

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, Ali al-Sistani, has denounced attacks оn demonstrators аnd wаrnеd оf оutѕіdе іntеrfеrеnсе іn anti-government protests. Khamenei Rules Out Negotiations With Washington Without Nuclear Deal

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, says that if the US goes back to the nuclear deal, it can negotiate with Iran like other parties. Otherwise, he said, “Iranian officials, at any level, will never talk to American officials. This is part of their policy to put pressure on Iran.” Khamenei added, “their policy of maximum pressure will fail.”

In case you missed it, we almost went to war on Thursday night.  That same day, Iran shot down an American surveillance drone, which was flying in or near the country.  President Trump confirmed earlier media reports Friday morning that he authorized a limited strike on Iran, but called it off at the last minute.  His action, and abrupt control-Z, raise more questions about the administration’s Iran policy than they do answers.
