Thousands of people took to the streets of Berlin on Sunday in protest against extreme right-wing violence and anti-Semitism, in a gesture of repudiation of the attack that left two dead this week in the east German city of Halle. The protest began on Bebelplatz square, in front of the Humboldt University in the heart of the German capital. It was in this square where, in 1933, the Nazis burned books by Jewish authors considered “subversive” by Adolf Hitler’s regime.
On Wednesday throughout the world the Jewish people celebrated the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur, that comes 10 days after the New Year Holiday of Rosh Hashanna. In the city of Halle, Germany 80 congregants were praying in a synagogue when an assailant dressed in military garb tried to shoot his way into the synagogue which was locked with a security bell as is the custom in Europe.
Democratic-socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is no stranger to controversy, especially regarding her anti-Israel stances. She’s been criticized for supporting sanctions against Israel, aligning herself with Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, both of whom have been condemned for their anti-semantic comments, and most recently for her anti-Israel statements on the “Ebro in the Morning” talk show.
- The House of Representatives voted to condemn “anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, racism and other forms of bigotry” Thursday, in the wake of controversial remarks by freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). The vote was 407-23.
Anti-Semitism and other types of hatred between good people are avoidable through understanding their source. Rabbi Scheur Zalman of Liadi also called the Alter Rebbe who lived in the Russian Empire about two hundred and fifty years ago established a new approach in Judaism called Chabad related to the Lubavitcher Chassidic movement. Chabad is short for wisdom, understanding and knowledge.
