After finishing his visit to India, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Sri Lanka late on the 27th to prepare for the meeting with the country’s president and prime minister on the 28th. The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka also issued a statement criticizing Pompeo’s visit before his arrival.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, 74 year-old leader of the Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP), was sworn in as the country’s Prime Minister for the fourth time on Sunday. The swearing-in ceremony was held for Sri Lanka’s Ninth Parliament at the historic Buddhist temple, “Rajmaha Vihar,” in Kelaniya, a suburb of North Colombo.
As the results of yesterday’s parliamentary elections to elect Sri Lanka’s ninth parliamentarian come out, the Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance is headed for a landslide victory. According to the results released so far, the SLPFA, led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has around 60% of the votes.
