The United Nations on Friday announced a series of measures to tackle its worst financial crisis in nearly a decade. Germany’s Minister of the Environment, Svenja Schulze, will announce Germany’s joining an alliance of countries committed to phasing out coal in electricity generation. The announcement to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance comes ahead of a United Nations climate summit in New York on Monday.
Yemeni Houthis have offered to halt all attacks against Saudi Arabia if Saudi Arabia stops its attacks and the coalition it leads. The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen welcomed the proposal, and described it as a first step towards ending the six-year war in Yemen. “This proposal could send a powerful message of the will to end the war,” Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said on Saturday.
Government forces have now managed to re-enter the strategic port three weeks after leaving Aden. According to the latest news from Yemen, Aden Airport is under the control of government forces. The government forces succeeded in seizing the airport and other areas of the Aden port from separatist forces in southern Yemen, German news agencies reported Wednesday quoting Yemen’s security circles. Yemeni separatists in the southern part of Yemen have surrendered after fierce clashes.

The United States has linked part of the economic sanctions against Iran to the human rights situation there and has blamed the country’s foreign secretary for violating international treaties. The Treasury Department’s Foreign Assets Oversight Office said in a statement released on its website that it had amended the title of “Sanctions Regulations Related to Human Rights Violations in Iran” and sanctioned Iran’s metal industry sector for violations.
Israel will be going to election again in September after failing to make a government with a majority. National security needs national unity and Israel failed to make a coalition government. The government was split after elections between Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Ganz both received an equal amount of votes.
To make the government all on the side of Likud (the right side) Netanyahu needed the help of the other parties which had received mandates. On the right there was a conflict between the religious ultra-orthodox right and the secular right.
January 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day as designated by the United Nations General Assembly. It is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this annual day of commemoration, the U.N. urges every member state to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to work to prevent future genocides.
