- It is believed that Tesla plans to deploy the system and build battery cell production plants in its plants in Texas, Berlin, and Shanghai.
- So far, Tesla has not disclosed when it will start producing battery cells in the Berlin Gigafactory.
- Tesla officially stated that production of cars will begin in July 2021.
According to reports, Tesla is currently building its first large-scale battery and car manufacturing plant in Europe, in Berlin, Germany. The plant has made the latest progress. The electric car manufacturer is recruiting management positions for the German plant.
Tesla held a “Battery Day” event earlier this year, at which the company announced its plan to produce battery cells for the first time. At that event, the company released its own battery cell, called Tesla 4680.
After that, Tesla set up a trial production line for battery cells in its factory in Fremont, California, and the company is currently increasing the capacity of this production line.
It was previously reported that Tesla independently completed the design of the entire production system. Currently, the company is using the production line to improve equipment, and its goal is to use this production system to build a large-scale battery cell production plant.

According to the construction progress, Tesla’s battery factory in Berlin seems to be the company’s first factory to start producing battery cells. According to the latest news, Tesla is currently recruiting personnel to lead the manufacturing of battery cells in the Berlin plant.
Drew Baglino, the Senior Vice President of Power Train and Energy Engineering said, “accelerate the transition to sustainable energy by joining Tesla’s cell manufacturing effort in Berlin, recruiting for leadership positions now.”
The positions currently being recruited at Tesla’s Berlin plant include battery cell manufacturing and operations leadership, battery cell workshop senior leadership, and battery cell production engineering manager.
Earlier reports stated that Tesla CEO Elon Musk went to the Berlin Gigafactory to promote recruitment and even interviewed candidates in person. However, what he focused on was a 25-person Tesla factory working group responsible for solving the construction of the Berlin Super Factory.
So far, Tesla has not disclosed when it will start producing battery cells in the Berlin Gigafactory. However, outsiders speculate that the production time of battery cells will be consistent with the production time of vehicles.
Tesla officially stated that production of cars will begin in July 2021. Tesla plans to produce Model Y in the Berlin plant. This model will use a new structural battery pack, and the new battery pack requires 4680 battery cells.
However, Tesla has also stated that it will support the production of Model Y in Europe through battery cells manufactured in its trial production plant.
Although the official stated that its battery cell production in the United States is only a trial production, and its purpose is to test and adjust the battery cell manufacturing system, so as to pave the way for larger factories such as Berlin in the future, Tesla’s production target is not counted low.
The company hopes that its trial production capacity will reach 10 GWh per year. This production capacity is higher than that of most battery factories now. These battery cells will play an important role in the initial ramp-up of Tesla battery cells and Berlin-made Model Y.
