- “We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!”
- Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose sanctions on Turkey if they cross any "red lines."
- Washington has so far refused to say that Turkey has crossed such "red lines," or define what they are.
US President Donald Trump says there are three options to resolve the crisis between Turkey and the Kurds in northeastern Syria, and talked Thursday on the importance of the option of “US mediation” between Ankara and the Kurds. Turkey launched a military attack in northern Syria this week, however, Washington confirmed that at this stage, Turkey did not cross the red line.

“We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!” Trump wrote on Twitter. Trump has commissioned US diplomats to broker a “ceasefire” between Ankara and the Kurds in a bid to end the Turkish offensive in northern Syria, a senior US official said Thursday.
What is the red line that Trump has set for Turkish troops?
In response to a question about the definition of this red line, he said that it includes ethnic cleansing as well as indiscriminate aerial or ground bombardment of civilians.
Turkey launched an attack on Wednesday hours after Trump’s announcement that “fifty US soldiers have left” the Syrian border with Turkey, which appeared to be a retreat from the support of the Kurds, which Ankara considers a threat. Trump found himself under a barrage of criticism from US military veterans for “abandoning” the Kurds, America’s allies, by withdrawing troops from northern Syria, allowing Ankara to launch an attack.
However, the US president stressed earlier that he would impose sanctions on Turkey if the Turkish military operation in Syria exceeded “borders,” without specifying any “red line.” In response to a question on Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused in an interview on the program “Meet the Press,” broadcast on Sunday, to “specifically describe” this red line.
