Russia announced a new pistol for defense personnel. The pistol is 9x19mm, which is being developed by the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering. The need of such weapon arose for the plain clothing officers needs and special forces. Furthermore, the new weapon will come in multiple versions, including a special edition for the concealed carry purpose.
The prototype is expected to be unveiled by the end of the year. According to the head of the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering, all needed patent and certification documentation has been completed.
Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIITochMash) is a major designer and producer of weapons for the Russian military and MVD Internal Troops.
Initially, there will be three version of the weapon:
- A full size service pistol.
- A small size, for the conceal and carry purpose, specifically for Russian law enforcement and defense personnel.
- A sport version, for the enthusiasts.
TsNIITochMash is known for developing unusual weapons, including underwater weapons, silent weapons, and specific weapons for equipping anti-terrorism units. Additionally, the same facility created special cartridges and weapons for reconnaissance divers and other specialists operating under water: the 4.5 mm SPS cartridge and the SPP-1 underwater pistol, as well as the 5.66 mm MPs cartridge and the APS submachine gun for it.
In silent weapons, the maximum degree of sound suppression is achieved in the pistol complex PSS-SP4. It is comparable to the noise of an air gun shot. At the same time, a high striking effect on targets is provided.
Special 9-mm pistol, and small-sized automatic weapon systems for equipping anti-terrorism units, have a high armor-piercing capability. The SR1M self-loading pistol with a SP10 cartridge, known as the “Gyurza,” the SR-2 submachine gun, and the SR-3 small-size automatic (“Vortex”) provide a solution to all the tasks assigned to small arms during special operations.
This weapon can be carried hidden under the outer clothing, and guarantees instant readiness to fire, if it is in the hand of a fighter. A large group of scientists and specialists of the Institute were awarded the government of the Russian Federation Award in the field of science and technology for creating a complex of personal weapons to equip counter-terrorism units.
The last new weapon developed in Russia was finalized in April 2020. The weapon is specifically designed for sports competitions. The “Aspid” can be used in different classes thanks to different capacity magazines (18 or 22 cartridges), as well as taking into account additional accessories.
The “Aspid” can be operated in a wide temperature range (from -30 to +50 degrees Celsius), and the guaranteed resource of the gun is at least 25,000 shots (the store resource is at least 7,500 shots). Russia continues to add and develop new weapons, especially in the defense sector.
