You do not have to grow up in the 70’s to know who Bob Marley is?. So yesterday I decided it was time to rediscover the person of Bob Marley and what he stood for. Bob was a symbol of peace! A Rastafarian?. Do you know what the religion of Rastafari is? Rastafari, also known as Rastafarianism, is an Abrahamic religion that developed in Jamaica during the 1930s. It is classified as both a new religious movement and a social movement by scholars of religion.
Bob said “the man that breed my mom was white” so he wasn’t pure white he wasn’t pure black ? but he choose black though.
Bob was respected. He didn’t want to join any political group in Jamaica at that time. I mean being affiliated to one would have compromised his stand on Peace because of politics. Also gang members were used by politicians. Of course these gangs killed as well (creating some sort of political tension in the city), so Bob couldn’t preach peace and at the same time applaud those that bring disunity.
Bob always wanted unity and peace and so he and his team came up with a concert that would bring people together. The current prime minister and his political party highjacked it, so the opposition party using his gangs started passing a statement (you know how this things end up with killings…)
A turning point happened when there was an attempted assassination on Bob’s life! At 8:30 pm, on December 3, 1976, two days before the Smile Jamaica concert, seven men with guns raided Marley’s house at 56 Hope Road. Marley and his band were on break from rehearsal. Marley’s wife, Rita, was shot in the head in her car in the driveway. The gunmen shot Marley in the chest and arm. His manager, Don Taylor, was shot in the legs and torso.
Bob Marley, 48 hours after being shot, still went ahead to perform in the concert!
But then after the performance he left Jamaica ??. On the bright side?? he toured the world as much as he could! And his music became LIFE! It ministered to people and gave hope to millions of souls! His music became an avenue to reach others for peace! You remember “ONE LOVE”, “REDEMPTION SONG” NO WOMAN NO CRY”…etc
It can be said that fear of the insecurity in his country drove him away, but guess what?? Bob didn’t let fear win because HE RETURNED! Yes he came back to Jamaica for the one love concert and still believed in the unity he preached and that peace is possible! Even though Peace was not attained, Bob through his music made peace possible? now we all sing one love one heart.
Let’s get together and feel all right???.
Don’t let fear win.
